Discussion Questions:
Part 1: Write a 150 to 200-word response to one of the following questions, and post it as a reply to the appropriate thread in the Discussion Forum in Blackboard.
- Choose an example of Baroque art that is particularly dramatic in its style / storytelling. Describe the aspects of the scene or sculpture that create drama, and how they all come together to communicate a particular message. Describe the overall message or impression the work communicates. (You may also compare your work to a Renaissance model and describe how your work is similar and different, e.g. Michelangelo's David vs. Bernini's David) Baroque works were produced from ca 1600 on.
- Choose an example of Baroque architecture, which is particularly impressive in its size or complexity. Describe how the Baroque building takes the Greek and Roman Classical orders, and Renaissance models, and changes them to suit Baroque aesthetics. Some of the qualities art historians attribute to Baroque buildings are ostentation, grandiosity, theatricality, impressiveness, drama, complexity in building forms - and probably most telling, that Baroque architecture transforms Classical and Renaissance models in creative and original ways. Baroque works were produced from ca 1600 on.
- (Similar to DQ 1) Choose an example of Baroque art that you would consider particularly "Baroque" and describe why you think so. What aspects of the work reflect Baroque aesthetics? What qualities does the work share with other Baroque pieces? Baroque works were produced from ca 1600 on.
You must choose a unique work. So, if a classmate has already discussed a particular work, you will need to pick another. Please either upload image(s) of your work(s) to the thread to which you are replying, or link to Internet image(s). Please remember, I want your reading of the works. You can use the Internet or your book to find a work, but I don't want to hear what the Internet or Kleiner have to say. I want your interpretation.
Part 2: Comment on at least 2 of your classmates' responses
Guidelines for composing your Discussion Question response, and for replying to your classmates are provided in Blackboard.
Deliverables:
- By Tuesday at 5pm: Post your response to one of the Week 2 DQs (W2 DQ) in the Discussion Forum in Blackboard. (Do not create a new thread. Reply to the thread I have created for your Discussion Question.)
- By Thursday at 5pm: Post replies to at least 2 of your classmates’ W2 DQ responses
- The Group Leader of each group should post a thread for your topic to the Group Project forum, so that you may coordinate your efforts. Members of your group are listed in the "Request your Group Project Topic here" thread.
- Before 5pm Friday 3/30, complete the corrected "Checklist and Agreement Quiz".
