Week 5 Module

Discussion Questions:

Part 1: Write a 150 to 200-word response to one of the following questions, and post it as a reply to the appropriate thread in the Discussion Forum in Blackboard.

1. Find a work of modern art (produced after 1945) that provokes you, or elicits another strong emotion (angers, upsets, discomforts, saddens, shocks, inspires). The feeling should be intense, so amuses doesn't work.
2. Find a work of modern art (produced after 1945) that you don't think deserves to be called "art". Discuss its various details, and perhaps the story behind the work (the artist's goal), and then explain why you think the work is worthless.
3. Find a work created for social causes and discuss its message, the desired affect the artist(s) sought, and what affect the work has had. (Some examples include the AIDS quilt, feminist works of the 70s, anti-war art.)

You must choose a unique work. So, if a classmate has already discussed a particular work, you will need to pick another. Please either upload image(s) of your work(s) to the thread to which you are replying, or link to Internet image(s). Please remember, I want your reading of the works. You can use the Internet or your book to find a work, but I don't want to hear what the Internet or Kleiner have to say. I want your interpretation.

Part 2: Comment on at least 2 of your classmates' responses

Deliverables:

1. By Tuesday at 5pm: Post your response to one of the W5 DQs

2. By Thursday at 5pm: Post replies to at least 2 of your classmates’ W5 DQ responses

3. Optional: Complete your Museum Paper for early submission next class (if you wish to have your paper returned with comments before making your final submission).
