1 Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things.
2 But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things.
3 And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God?
4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?
5 But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,
6 who "will render to each one according to his deeds":
7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality;
8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness--indignation and wrath,
9 tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek;
10 but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
11 For there is no partiality with God.
12 For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law
13 (for not the hearers of the law [are] just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified;
14 for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves,
15 who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves [their] thoughts accusing or else excusing [them])
16 in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.
Therefore: Ch1 - God has revealed himself, and we have rejected him, so so we are without excuse.
God's wrath is revealed against unacknowledgement, ungratefulness, uncleanness and unrighteousness of men who know they deserve death. - Therefore: We can't judge others because we do many of them too.
2. God's truth judges all
3. God's truth judges me
4. He provides good things - instead of being ungrateful I need to repent and be grateful.
5. The longer I don't repent and obey God, the more of his wrath builds up.
6. Psalm 62: 12 Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy; For You render to each one according to his work.
7. Eternal life is given to those who continually seek God
8-9 wrath for those who are selfish/evil and do not seek God.
10. glory, honor, peace to Jews and Greeks that work what is good
11. God judges all equally - Jews shocked by this since they were God's chosen people and felt more deserving of His love.
12. Jews have the law, Gentiles don't, but both are sinners
Paul emphasized that for the Jews, possession of the law did not count, but practice of the law. They had external actions, but not internal attitude of submission.
13. To hear the law is not enough, but obedience is required
14 Gentiles know the law from nature
Ps:10 1-3 The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. 2 Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge. 3 [There is] no speech nor language [Where] their voice is not heard.
[Act 14:16-17 NKJV] 16 "who in bygone generations allowed all nations to walk in their own ways. 17 "Nevertheless He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness."
15 they are accused by it
16 they will be judged by God
No excuse for my unrighteousness
no self righteousness
fulfilling duty does not justify
Compare myself to God's truth - what God wants in loving him, loving others and seeking His Kingdom.
Grateful to God
17 Indeed you are called a Jew, and rest on the law, and make your boast in God,
18 and know [His] will, and approve the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law,
19 and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,
20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, having the form of knowledge and truth in the law.
21 You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal?
22 You who say, "Do not commit adultery," do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?
23 You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law?
24 For "the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you," as it is written.
25 For circumcision is indeed profitable if you keep the law; but if you are a breaker of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.
26 Therefore, if an uncircumcised man keeps the righteous requirements of the law, will not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision?
27 And will not the physically uncircumcised, if he fulfills the law, judge you who, [even] with [your] written [code] and circumcision, [are] a transgressor of the law?
28 For he is not a Jew who [is one] outwardly, nor [is] circumcision that which [is] outward in the flesh;
29 but [he is] a Jew who [is one] inwardly; and circumcision [is that] of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise [is] not from men but from God.
17-20 Indeed:
Jews cannot rely/be confident on just knowing God's truth/law to avoid his judgement.
[Hab 2:4 NKJV] 4 "Behold the proud, His soul is not upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith.
[2Th 2:10 NKJV] 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
[Rom 9:30-32 NKJV] 30 What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness of faith; 31 but Israel, pursuing the law of righteousness, has not attained to the law of righteousness. 32 Why? Because [they did] not [seek it] by faith, but as it were, by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone.
21-23 Jews teach others truth, but don't obey it.
Matt 23:15 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.
24 Gentiles see the sin of the Jews (lie, cheat, steal, adultery) and God is mocked for it
[Isa 52:5 NKJV] 5 Now therefore, what have I here," says the LORD, "That My people are taken away for nothing? Those who rule over them Make them wail," says the LORD, "And My name [is] blasphemed continually every day.
25 A key tenant of righteous superiority of the Jews was their physical circumcision. Paul says a real Jew is circumcized inwardly (does not live in the flesh, pride) but lives in the Spirit - trusting God to provide our needs we don't fall to fear and have to lie, cheat to protect ourselves.
26 and conversely, obedience is what determines righteousness.
27 and so uncircumsised who obey, will judge those who are circumsized but don't obey.
Jews memorized, studied, and were proud how they knew the rules of scripture more than anyone.
They made their own rules on top of God's law and followed those rituals, but did not acknowledge God as Lord, humble themselves before God, and love him through obedience.
What cultural religious rituals do I focus on, but then ignore submitting to worship, prayer and obedience to God?
