Mark 1 - Who is Jesus, Intro by John the Baptist, Wilderness, Disciples, Preach and heal spiritual and physical

1:1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

• John the Baptist sent to call Israel to repent, turn to God and to announce Jesus as the Messiah who will baptize them with the Holy Spirit
• Jesus goes into the wilderness for 40 days and is tempted by Satan
• Jesus calls Simon, Andrew, James and John from fishing to be disciples
• Jesus casts the demons out of the man in the synagog
• Jesus heals Simons mother of her fever and she gets up and serves them
• Jesus heals many sick that come to the house
• Jesus leaves early the next morning to pray.
• Jesus and the disciples go to other towns to preach, his primary calling, and to cast out demons
• Jesus heals the leper and tells him to show himself to the priest, but to keep quiet, and the healed man goes and tells everyone

Mark 2- Who can forgive - Preaches repentance, forgiveness, healing,

• Jesus preaches in a house in Capernum
• A paralytic is taken by 4 friends and let down through the roof
• Jesus forgives him and heals him as a lesson that he can do both
• Jesus goes to the sea and calls Matthew the tax collector and goes to his house to eat.
• 2:16 "I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance."
• Jews question why disciples are not following Jewish traditions, and Jesus says he is the bridegroom to be celebrated, the new wines to purify them, and Lord of the sabbath.

Mark 3 - Sabbath challenge ( withered hand picks up stool)

• Heals man with shriveled hand on sabbath
• Appoints 12 disciples
• Drive out Demon
• Leaders claim he is deamonic - A kingdom divided annoy
• Family claims he is crazy. -Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.

Mark 4 The message of the kingdom (throwing seed from back of car)

• Teaches from boat
• Parable of Kingdom as farmer spreading seed
• Went across lake and waves coming over now and Jesus calms them

Mark 5 (glove cast deamons to swine)

• Demonic in gentile city when boat comes to shore
• Cast into pigs and ruins local economy
• Sends freed man back to cities to tell what Jesus did
• Bleeding woman healed and honor restored
• Girl raised from dead

Mark 6 - (6 sht John Baptist, feed 5000, calms storm)

• Jesus sends out the 12 disciples 2x2 from Galilee
• Herod thinks that Jesus is John the Baptist who he had killed
• Jesus Teaches gospel - Feeds 5000
• Disciples leave in boat and Jesus walks on water and calms storm

Mark 7 (dce out of man, girl, mute)

- Pharisees challenge Jesus disciples for not following traditions - Jesus calls them out for following traditions and not obeying God

• what comes out of man is what corrupts.
• sidon woman with deamon possessed daughter begs for crumbs of healing
• deaf mute healed

7 loaves aand 3 fish for 4000

pharisees want signs - beware of leaven ( self sufficiency?)

4 things people miss about 4 Gospels (Good News)

1 They are not biographies - each has an audience and purpose - stories may differ since Jesus would preach same message multiple times in different places

Matthew - Jews - Jesus is promised Messiah (the Christ) - starts with geneology - quotes old tes

Mark - Roman's - Jesus is the Son of God - speaks of persecution Mark 7:2-4 Explains Jewish traditions when making a point - Mark wrote the message from hhihis close friend Peter Mark 15:39 Roman soldier said shirley this man was the son of God. - Best book to introduce people to Jesus.

Luke - Gentiles - Jesus was a man, not a myth. wrote an orderly account so that we could know the certainty of the truth. Luke also wrote Acts.

John - Written to Jews and Gentiles - Jesus is God. Focus is on the last 30 days. John 20:30-31 written so that you may believe and have life in his name.

Read the book as a single novel - God has invaded planet earth and heaven and hell have declared it.

Mark 1:1

1. What is the good news?

He was a real person.

Christ - we have a savior

Son of God - God came to us.

2. How do I get this good news

The good news comes by repentance and confession.

Jesus 3 Key events

Baptized by John

• V4 John's baptism was of repentance for the forgiveness of sins - brought by revival - Jews were having the baptism that Gentiles normally received
• For us, our sins are forgiven at the cross when we repent, so baptism is just a testimony of that

Empowered by the Holy Spirit

• God audibaly and visually acknowledged Jesus
• v12, Luke 4:14, Mark 6:4-6, Heb 2:17, 4:15 - needed Holy Spirit for power

Tested by Satan - 3 temptations we all face

• who do we trust in a crisis
• What will be do to avoid pain
• will we serve God or use God

people seek God for success not surrender

the secret to prayer

• prayer is not something we do, it is someone were with
• Not about getting what we want but connecting with who we are talking to.

two things to consider

if we are only coming to God to get what we want he may be running from us

prayerlessness may be our greatest sin, because of what it says about who we really think who is in charge.

Why some do not listen and some don't last

There are no secrets

God is at work even when we cant see it

God uses small things to produce great things

gives thanks, ( thanks for the provision even though it was not enough)

broke bread and fish,

broke people into groups as Jesus required

disciples distributed

Disciples collect leftovers

• focus on the provider/seek his kingdom, not your provision Matt 5:32-33
• Give God what he has provided - bring what you have
• Share it - Phil 4:15 - give to God and he will meet your needs
• Give thanks for whatever you receive 1 ThesThess 5:18
• Let God break it and use it
• Do whatever the Lord says Prov 3:5-6
• Save leftovers - remember Gods provision

Jesus travels from tyre through Sidon to the Decapolis where Gentiles lived (where he had previously healed demonic from leagion)

Deaf mute man gentile - begged Jesus to be healed

Did not merit - plenty of Jewish believers needed healing and were not - Matt 20:13-15 Kindom is not fair - God does what he wants - he wants our relationship- not a recipe

jesus made him beg - persistence is the normal journey Luke 11, 18 never give up

spit - saliva considered good of an important person

God works different every time...relationship not a pattern

Dont tell - dont assume one person's miracle applies to everyone

Mark 9

Disciples arguing about who who was most important- Jesus reproves and says they need to be childlike in receiving the Kingdom of God in not having a selfish agenda. Children were treated as low importance, but he says the most unimportant will be first. Faith, trust, innocence of child. Obey Not proud, open to instruction.

Children attracted to Jesus because he gave attention Scripture truth does not make sense to our temporal mind, and we justify Is 40:11 He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs And carry them And gently lead those who are with young.
