Park at Port-y-Parc carpark SO 288 166 by continuing up Chapel Road straight on up the hill (No Through Road) to the end of the lane.
- Take track signposted to Porth-y-Parc opposite the carpark. Passing farm and holiday cottage go on up lane to a stile and enter ‘Parc Lodge National Trust’ land.
- Follow green lane going through a small piece of woodland. (It is easier to walk on the top of the bank on the right hand side as the lane has been taken over by a little stream in wet weather.)Where path divides take the right fork. Continue upward and go through gate / stile. Where track next divides - notice a National Trust waymark on a tree at this point - follow it to the right.
- Go through gate, carry on straight over ‘crossroad’ of track and on up through the woods. Go through 2nd gate, cross a little stream and as you climb on up the Sugar Loaf will appear like a volcano on the left. After a grassy area you will meet a track and the Cibi stream.
- Turn right along the track through ancient oak woodland. When you reach a stile a gate and a stile at the end of the woods take a path to the left along fence line passing the woods and then fields, towards the Sugar Loaf which will be to the right. Ignore any paths to left or right.
- At a boggy area, continue to gates / stile marked ‘National Trust Parc Lodge’. Here you can see the the Brecon Beacons in the far right distance and the Sugar Loaf behind you. Ignoring the path to the right, carry straight on along the the long Rholben ridge with the fence on the left. At the end of the fence keep right and continue along the ridge before dropping down off ridge (good views of Abergavenny).
- At a brick-built ruined cottage partly hidden by tall box trees and fruit trees, take path on left around the hill. Go left where the path divides after a few yards, then cross 1st stile (high) on the left.
- Go through wooded area, cross another stile ignoring path to right, and through metal gate. Stay on lower path next to fence. At end of fence turn right downhill to rejoin track. Turn right to return to carpark.
