Do not attempt this walk when the bracken is high.
Park at the Fro car park between Bettws and Fforest Coal Pit
- Turnright down the road then after a short distance turn left down a lane signposted Upper Bettws Farm.
- Continue up the lane passing yoga studio, go through the gate to Upper Bettws Farm and take the stile on the left and on up a steep field.
- Go over a stile and then take a stile on the left. Turn right to reach a stone wall and cross the stile. Turn left for a few yards as far as a spring then go right to meet the main path. Turn right here.
- After a few yards the park forks. Take the upper path and walk parallel wall / fence to the right. There are several paths to choose from as you walk along the hillside just stay parallel to the wall.
- Where the wall turns uphill then follow the contour. Stay parallel to the wall until it turns downhill. Here the path divides again. Take the path which heads straight on to the end of the hill. (The lower path leads down to Bettws).
- When you reach the end of Bryn Arw, turn to the right towards the rocks, good for a coffee stop, good views over Abergavenny.
- Return to the path and carry on up the hill to the ridge. Walk all along the ridge, follow the path as it heads down to a fence / wall.
- EITHER Turn left and continue to the stile you originally crossed onto the open hillside and retrace your step back to the car park.
- OR continue on downhill to a track. Turn left and go through a gate. At the end of the track go through a gate onto a metalled road.
- Pass farms, also Salem Chapel on your left. Turn left up road opposite the old stone school. Turn left again and pass the Post Office. After a short distance turn right up track signposted ‘Sugar Loaf 3.2km’.
- Go through the gate onto National Trust land marked Sugar Loaf. Go uphill until you reach the end of the field boundary wall / fence where there is a stile.
- Cross the stile and and continue through the field passing an old house on your left. Go through gate by old barn, then another gate.
- With fence on the left carry on to a double gate in the far boundary. Once through gates carry on back to the car park.
