Layby on left just over the bridge in Skenfrith. SO 458 201

Directions

1. From the layby walk back towards the village. Just before the bridge cross the road and take the stile on the left.
2. Follow the waymarks across the fields alongside the river. You pass Sand House, then through woodlands and more riverside fields before climbing away from the river to Llanrothal Barns.
3. The footpath passes between the barns, and onto a lane. A footpath on your right takes you to Llanrothal Church.
4. Return the way you came.

Points of Interest

Llanrothal Church is said to have been founded by a Celtic saint, St Ridol, and the dedication to St John the Baptist is thought to date from the Norman period. Rescued from ruin in 1921, it has a beautiful rustic Medieval interior. The nave has a 12th-century window in its north wall, while the other windows here are 14th-century. The impressive south window in the chancel is clearly later, probably dating from c1400.
