Park at the Sugar Loaf car park at Mynydd Llanwenarth SO268167. Note the glorious view!
- Head up the path in a north north westerly direction.
- Keep straight on bearing slightly left at stone wall on field corner.
- At the next field corner( c. 100m) bear right away from the stone wall. Note Sugar Loaf coming into view (depending on the weather).
- At the point where paths cross (c. 500m) turn left, slowly climbing towards another path crossing - depending on the weather there may be a view to the right into St Mary’s Vale.
- At the path crossing (c. 300m) turn right and head east, contouring below Sugar Loaf
- Cross a stream (care may be required in wet conditions) where there is a view to the right down the narrow stream into St Mary’s Vale.
- Where the path ( Point B on map) meets a field wall / fence bear right. Continue past the lone hawthorn tree until you come to a small group of trees below you to the right. (Point A on the map) This is a good place for a break, approximately 2 miles from the start of the walk.
- Either retrace your steps to the car park.
- Or continue along the path dropping down over the ‘nose’ of the Rholben, taking left turns to High Beeches. Continue to circle along the lower contour along the far side. At the first path junction bear left, and at the second bear right. From this point the path climbs again back to point B on the map, and retrace your earlier steps to the car park. This extension adds 2 miles to the walk.
