When assignments or challenges require multiple teams or cross functional departments working together to reach a shared goal many challenges come up. In order to be successful there are some key and fundamental components that have to be in place.
Communication is probably the biggest challenges in any organization no matter the size. When it comes to information decimation, including general communications, it is imperative to execute rapidly and consistently. This is an area of constant improvement for all. There are hundreds of options and avenues to conduct communications with today's technology. It all starts with actually doing it and as close to real time as possible. In any organization one of the top feedback criteria from the workforce will always be better communication.
Action planning is another critical area which needs careful attention and constant refinement. Project management is how things get done in organizations and having a good road map can make or break the initiative. Making sure updates and communications on the updates of the project plan are required to be successful. When I wrote "How to build and all terrain vehicle for success" communication from the customer to the manufactures was a key element of the planning and execution. Don't let this critical step be left behind as it will leave those on the ship with no navigation.
Meetings and face time across the playing field should be constant. All groups working together need to have a dedicated POC (point of contact) for the initiative. This responsibility carries a lot of weight as the communication strategy and flow of information needs to be shared across the teams and their members, and the inputs / deliverables from each sector have clear communication regarding their position on tasks, duties, and achievements.
Celebrating wins and reviewing opportunities as a shared group for the collaboration provides transparency and the current state of the initiative. The length of the program and it intricateness may determine the cadence towards review. Going back to action planning and communication, defining roles and support mechanisms to get the job done may be big players in the initiatives overall movement and outcomes.
As you continue to build and develop your own team(s) and employees, relationships with cross functional business partners (internal or external) always remember to respect everyone's challenges, keep the transparency real towards the initiative, and focus on the end result.
