Class of 2020

athlete-Richard Long

Richard Long '07 competed in both track and football at SJHS. Long is one of the most decorated football players in SJ history and was a force on both sides of the ball. Playing for legendary SJ coach Dick Krol, Long amassed over 5,000 yards rushing and scored 56 touchdowns as a running back on offense. On defense, Long had over 300 tackles and had 7 interceptions from his linebacker position. Long was also All-District, All-Region, and All-State in track and field. He finished as the state runner-up in the discus his senior year and he was also the Shenandoah District and Region B champion in the shot put that year. Long ran All-District times in the 100 (11.94) and the 200 (24.19) as well.

Long went on to play football at Appalachian State.

Athlete-Molly Beall

Molly (Beall) Davis '09 was a standout in two sports. Beall was an All-District performer in volleyball during her career, but it is basketball where she left a remarkable legacy.

Beall is one of 9 girls in SJHS history to score over 1000 points in her career. Beall finished with 1,207 points and 771 rebounds over her 4-year varsity career. The Generals won 4 straight Shenandoah District regular-season titles during her career and made it to two VHSL State Final-Fours.

Athlete-Jerry Dellinger

Jerry Dellinger '64 was a standout athlete in multiple sports for the Generals in the early 60s. Dellinger was one of the prestigious 4-Star Generals of the early days of the school, meaning he competed in track, baseball, football, and basketball. Dellinger was a running back and defensive back on the football teams. He played point guard on the championship basketball teams coached by legendary SJ hoops coach Jim O'Dell. He played second base for the baseball team and participated in multiple events in track and field.

Coach-Pam Hardy

Pam Hardy 69-74 was a physical education teacher and coach from 1969-74. Hardy coached JV and varsity track, along with JV and varsity basketball. Hardy's teams had unprecedented success in an era before Title IX. Her basketball teams were dominant and produced SJ legends, Julie Thomas Wilkins and Mimi Moore. Hardy coached JV and varsity with assistant Margaret Robinson Fansler. Hardy established a program that helped girls' athletics become a major part of SJ sports and led to an even more dominant run by Julie Wilkins' teams during the late 70s. During her time, the Stonewall girls' games were played in front of packed crowds and she pushed to get paid assistant coaches for female sports. The varsity team had a 52-8 record during her time as coach.

Hardy went on to a long-time career in administration for Shenandoah County Public Schools.

Contributor-Fred Greene

Fred Greene '77 was a fixture at SJ sporting events for more than two decades. Greene's biggest contribution was his coaching of cross country runners as the assistant to legendary cross country coach John Wymer. During their time together, Greene and Wymer's teams won six state championships in cross country (3 girls' titles 85,89, and 90 and 3 boys' titles 89,90, and 91). Greene also mentored several distance runners that ran at an All-State level in track and field.

When not coaching, Greene could be found running the clock at games or volunteering at some other SJ activity.

Class of 2022

Athlete-John Brumback

John Brumback '82 was a major part of the SJ Cross Country dynasty. Brumback was the individual state champion in 1981 and led the team to the team state championship that fall as well. He was also a standout in track and field for the Generals earning All-State status on the track as well. Brumfield still holds the school's 3200 record 40 years later with a time of 9:43.5.

Athlete-Tara StrawDerman

Tara Strawderman Mancini '96 was a standout in 3 sports. Strawderman was a full rotation player for our volleyball team, a defensive-minded ball-hawking guard for the basketball team, and a dominant track and field athlete. Strawderman's most impressive accomplishments came in the jumps where she was a consistent All-State performer. She moved on to compete for Bridgewater College where she won multiple ODAC titles and qualified for the NCAA meet in the long-jump several times. Strawderman still holds the school record for the long jump at 18' 1.75."

Athlete-Matt Tusing

Matt Tusing '01 was a standout player in football, baseball, and basketball. Tusing was a key member of successful basketball and baseball teams throughout his career, but the football field is where he truly excelled. Tusing was a force both on offense and defense. He is one of the all-time best running backs in SJ history and was also named Northern Virginia Daily defensive player of the year his senior year for his play at linebacker. Most who played and coached would tell you Tusing's greatest trait was his leadership skill. His skills were on full display during the fall of '00 when leading the Generals' football team to the Region B Championship.

Coach-Bob harner

Bob Harner 75-83 was a teacher and guidance counselor to go along with coaching multiple teams at Stonewall. Harner coached track and field, football, cross country, and volleyball. Harner's team captured the '81 state cross country championship. He also helped found our volleyball team during the 78-79 season. He got the Generals off to a great start as they captured the Skyline District championship in that first season. The team finished as the region runner-up. The next year he led the Generals to a repeat in the district and the region title. Harner helped numerous track athletes make it to the All-State level.

Contributor-Max Hutton

Max Hutton 74-86 was a teacher, coach, and then principal at SJHS. Mr. Hutton was a huge sports fan and promoter of athletics at the high school level. He was at almost every contest during his time as principal. He later moved on to Central High School. He became one of the top administrators in the county and has always played a huge role in the advancements of student-athletes in Shenandoah County.
