cross country programs have successful history

John Wymer was the coach for 7 of the state champions

Just like our golf program, our boys and girls cross country teams have had an incredible amount of success. The boys program has won five state championships and been the runner-up three times. John Wymer was the coach for four of those titles (78, 89, 90, and 91). He was assisted by Fred Greene during a dominant stretch when the Generals won three straight state titles from 1989-91. Bob Harner was the coach in 81. The boys program has also produced six individual state champions and two individual runner-ups. John Kagey was a two-time state champion. An interesting fact, the Generals in 1966 finished third but there was not a separate meet for different classifications. That Generals finish may have been the most impressive against every school regardless of size in the state.

Our girls program has produced three state championships including the first state championship to be recognized by the VHSL in 1985. John Wymer was the coach for all three of those titles. The 1989 season was particularly special as Stonewall claimed both the boys and girls state championships in the same year.
