NCEA Level 1 Design and Visual Communication
Aims
To equip students with creative and critical thinking skills and visual communication techniques that can be applied to a range of design contexts.
Course Content
Students investigate an influential designer's work and incorporate features of their design in developing original product and spatial design concepts. Students express their ideas through a variety of drawing and model making techniques including familiarisation with technical, architectural and engineering drawing conventions, methods of presentation and design software. Students are challenged to apply creative thinking in developing original and eye-catching design outcomes.
Skills
Through studying Design and Visual Communication, students are encouraged to be innovative, creative, and to show initiative.
Assessment
A variety of assessment tasks are set over the year in the form of design projects. Work for the external standards is collected over the year and sent away for national assessment during Term Four.
Qualification gained
NCEA Level 1 Technology (Design and Visual Communication) - full course completion 18 credits

Recommended: Year 10 Design and Visual Communication, Digital Technologies, Textiles or Visual Art
