NCEA Level 2 Classical and Religious Studies
This course is conditional on a sufficient number of students being enrolled.
Aims
To know about the societies and beliefs that have laid the foundations for the world in which we live in, in order to understand ourselves, and our place in the world.
To explore community and cultural identity, values, beliefs and perspectives in an interdisciplinary manner.
To think critically about the nature of reality, relationships, and what it means to be human in order to understand the past and present, and to imagine possible futures.
Course Content
Mythology and Religion - A comparison between Greek mythology and Christian Beliefs about God, life after death, what it means to be human and worship.
Roman Society - An examination of the relationship between individuals, society and the government under the first-century Roman Empire.
Classical Art - An examination of the domestic and public art and architecture of Pompeii.
Sacred Text - An historical and literary reading of the Gospel of John in relation to its Greco-Roman context and original Greek language.

Thinking - enquiry, interpretation and communication in artistic, literary, philosophical, religious and historical settings
Valuing - interpreting primary source materials, viewing and examining concepts from a number of viewpoints,
Practical - paragraph and formal response writing, presenting and oral discussion,
Social - the ability to function in a group
Assessment
There are a variety of assessment tasks and school examinations. Externally assessed topics are examined nationally at the end of the year.
Qualification gained
Full course completion — 20 Credits (12 credits in Religious Education and 8 Credits in Classical Studies).

Prior knowledge required
NCEA Level 1 English or History or equivalent, in order to show adequate literacy skills. Exceptional circumstances may be considered on an individual basis after consultation with the HoD.

Potential for 'Theology for Year 13 Students' University of Otago first year paper; either CHTH 102: The History of Christianity or CHTH 131: God and Ethics in the Modern World. Entrance to this course is strictly through discussion with Senior Leadership.
