NCEA Level 2 Physics

Aims

Students will develop an understanding of concepts, principles and models in physics and be able to use these to explain physical phenomena, systems and devices. They will examine the nature of theories and models, the impact of physics on society and develop practical investigative skills.

Course Content

The course in physics is developed through experiments, discussion, reading and problem solving.

Electricity — DC circuits, electric and magnetic fields

Light and waves — reflection and refraction of light and water waves: interference, and the electromagnetic spectrum

Mechanics — kinematics, vectors, forces, circular motion, torque, momentum and energy principles

Assessment

There are a variety of assessment tasks and school examinations. Externally assessed topics are examined nationally at the end of the year.

Qualification gained

Full course completion — 20 credits in NCEA Physics Level 2

This subject has links with

Other physical sciences, such as chemistry and geology, and with mathematics. Physics is essential for further training in engineering, medical physics, some courses in architecture and provides a foundation for health sciences and veterinary science.

Prior knowledge required

A satisfactory level of achievement in NCEA Level 1 Science and Mathematics. Level 2 Physics is recommended in conjunction with a Level 2 Mathematics course. Students who are considering studying Level 3 Physics the following year are recommended to choose the Level 2 Pure Mathematics course.
