This SDG is about climate change and things like global warming or mass extinctions the purpose of the SDG is to stop different types of pollutants polluting our earth.1.2 trillion tons of ice are melting each year and there is enough wasted food to fill more than 700 football fields each year. We chose this SDG because as a group we wanted to spread the word about the affects of climate change and also take action in our communities. We wanted to make sure that more people take action in their own homes to be more sustainable.
Human’s desire for innovation will impact the long term effects of climate change
An inquiry into humans' impact on global warming and the environment both positive and negative,
An inquiry into the impacts of climate change on different forms of geography in the world
An inquiry into how advanced technology has affected the pollution emitted into the environment.
For our level one action, we sent emails out to the teachers of Freedom 7 about climate change and how they can be more sustainable. We asked them to send un a list of ways they are going to be more sustainable. The class with the best ways to be sustainable would be recognized
For our level 2 action, we went to a bike ministry and we fixed bikes. The bike ministry distributes the bike to the homeless, or anyone who wants the bike. This reduces the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere, slowly reducing climate change.
For my level 3 action i made a chalk mural at gleason park and then posted it on social media. While I was making my mural a few people asked what I was doing so I explained to then what i was doing and what it was. I had 5 circles in the middle circle was the earth and in each corner I had 4 other circles with different ways you could help the local environment. The first one was to bike more than drive so there will be less greenhouse gasses produced. The second one is how if you wash your car on the concrete then the soap can flow into the lagoon and hurt the marine life. The third one is how if you put fertilizer it can also be washed into the lagoon and hurt marine life. The last one is about how you can use reusable bags instead of plastic bags so animals can't eat them
For my level three action, I decided to plant mangroves. I got the mangroves from someone I know that grows them. I decided to plant them at the riverside condo my grandmother lives in and the church I go to. Mangroves have many benefits to the river and the place that their in front of. They provide shelter from hurricanes and tropical storms. They also help to habitat many animal species and give homes to all kinds of critters and creatures. I also created a flyer about how important mangroves reforestation and put them around my neighborhood.
What I did for my level 3 action is that I made a PSA about climate change. I did this because this was one way to spread awareness to people. After I made the PSA on a IMovie I posted the video on YouTube. I added to the problem of climate change and how to take action and what to do. Video
For my level three action I created an article to be posted in our schools weekly newsletter. The article had multiple facts about climate change and how it is affecting our world. The article also had information about our local bike ministry. They receive broken or old bikes, fix them, and then give the bikes away to anyone who wants one. I spread the word about people in my community helping and being more mindful of the amount of the amount of greenhouse gasses they are producing by driving their car. Take Action!
LOI 1
This globe represents our first line of inquiry,
An inquiry into humans' impact on global
warming and the environment, both positive
and negative. On this globe, it shows factories
producing greenhouse gasses that contribute
to global warming.
LOI 2
This globe represents our second line of inquiry,
An inquiry into how different forms of geography
Are impacted by climate change. This globe shows
Two melting glaciers that are melting because the
earth is heating up.
LOI 3
This globe represents our third line of inquiry,
how advanced technologies affect the environment.
It has solar panels and windmills to show
advanced and new technologies which relate
to our third line of inquiry.
Our Showcase:
Our group chose this showcase piece because we wanted to show all the things we learned in a creative way. We have 3 globes for 3 lines of inquiry to show how the earth changing, and sustainable things that happen. We originally wanted to use Styrofoam balls, but our mentor teacher suggested using recycled materials. Instead, we paper mached recycled newspaper to make our globes.
