At Seymour Middle School, we are incredibly proud of our athletic teams and the dedication they bring to every game. We encourage all students, parents, and faculty members to come out and support our athletes by attending the various athletic events throughout the season.
As representatives of SMS, we expect all Seymour students to demonstrate sportsmanship by treating visiting teams and their fans with courtesy and respect. Let's show our Cougar pride not only through our cheers but also through our actions. Together, we can make every game a positive and memorable experience for everyone involved!
You can contact Craig Prasauckas, Athletic Coordinator, Seymour Middle School (cprasauckas@seymourschools.org ) or Mrs. Cathy Federowicz, District Athletic Director (CFederowicz@seymourschools.org), for specific Athletics questions.

Athletics Rules
It is important for students and parents to realize that participation in the Seymour interscholastic athletic program is not a right, but a privilege which is afforded to those individuals who possess the ability, attitude, disposition, cooperative spirit, and desire to represent the student body, the school district, and the Seymour community in a manner which reflects favorably upon their school. Athletics are completely voluntary and no student is obligated to take part. There are some special standards and expectations in the area of academics, citizenship, training rules, and sportsmanship with which participants must comply. It is essential that student athletes and parents must be familiar with all rules and regulations governing athletic participation in the Seymour Schools. It is important to remember that the school reserves the right to revoke the privilege of participation if a team member does not conduct himself or herself in an acceptable manner.
The following rules will apply to all athletes:
In order to be eligible to practice or play on a given day, an athlete must be in school four consecutive hours. In cases of emergency absences or extenuating circumstances, the Principal or Principal’s designee (i.e. Assistant Principal, Athletic Coordinator, etc.) will make the final decision regarding participation.
An athlete suspended from school will not be allowed to practice or play in games through the duration of the suspension. In addition, each coach will have the option of further action, in line with his or her own training rules.
The decision as to whether a player participates in a regularly scheduled contest is left to the discretion of the Coach, subject to review by the Athletic Coordinator and Principal.
Athletes are responsible for all uniforms and equipment issued to them and will be held financially liable for any losses or damages.
All injuries must be reported to the Coach and school nurse.
A physical examination is required before active participation in a sport.
All athletes must observe good sportsmanship at all times.
Students who are failing one or more courses (as determined by the most recent midterm or end-of-term grades) are not eligible to participate on a team.
Athletes must ride to and from away games with their team on the bus unless prior written arrangements have been made.
Athletic Physicals & Registration
A yearly physical examination is required for all students participating in interscholastic sports. Students planning to participate in athletics must obtain their own physical examination prior to participation. To avoid difficulties with scheduling summer physical appointments, it is recommended that student-athletes schedule their physicals in late spring and submit the results to the school before the end of the school year in June. Further, parents and guardians should be familiar with both concussion and sudden cardiac arrest protocols:
The Seymour Physical Form (CLICK HERE) must be completed by a physician and submitted to the school nurse before participation. The cost of the examination is the responsibility of the student-athlete. All physical forms and other required information must be uploaded through the registration process on Family ID (CLICK HERE) before a student-athlete tries out for a sport.
If additional information is needed, please contact the SMS Athletic Coordinator, Mr. Prasauckas, or SMS Nurse, Mrs. Stewart.
Please note: No athlete will be permitted to participate (try out or practice) without meeting these requirements.
Athletes and Physical Education
Student-athletes who are not physically able to participate in physical education will not be eligible to physically participate in after school athletics at Seymour Middle School. A doctor’s note, excusing a student from physical education class, will automatically disqualify a student athlete from participating in Seymour Middle School after school athletics until they have been cleared by their doctor to participate in physical education class and after school Seymour Middle School athletic activities. Furthermore these classes must be made up with the physical education teacher following the normal missed class procedures. Student-athletes may still be required to attend practices (but may not physically participate) at the discretion of their respective coaches.
Insurance for Athletes
The Seymour Board of Education Policy covers all Seymour Middle School athletes who are injured during all scheduled practice sessions and contests. The insurance is provided through the Bollinger Insurance Co., Short Hills, N.J. and is a full excess policy. This means that the policy covers the expenses not paid by your primary insurance company, such as Anthem Blue Cross. If you do not have any primary insurance coverage, this policy will pay all incurred costs.
Any athletic injuries requiring medical attention should be reported immediately to the Head Coach of the particular sport. The coach will file an accident report with the School Nurse. The School Nurse will provide the parents of the injured student with the information and forms necessary to obtain excess coverage and reimbursement through Bollinger Insurance. It is the responsibility of the parents to complete and file the Bollinger Insurance paperwork in a timely manner in order to receive excess benefits.
Initially, all claims will be submitted first to the parent’s personal insurance carrier. Any costs not paid by the personal insurance carrier will then be submitted to Bollinger Insurance for reimbursement. Any questions concerning this coverage should be directed to the School Nurse or to the Business Office at 888-4564.
