Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

What is Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)?

As defined by California Department of Education Code:

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) means an acquired injury to the brain caused by an external physical force, resulting in total or partial functional disability or psychosocial impairment, which adversely affects educational performance. The term applies to both open or closed head injuries resulting in impairments in one or more areas, such as cognition; language; memory; attention; reasoning; abstract thinking; judgment; problem-solving; sensory, perceptual and motor abilities; psychosocial behavior; physical functions; information processing; and speech. The term does not include brain injuries that are congenital or degenerative, nor brain injuries induced by birth trauma. (34 CFR Sec. 300.8(c)(12)).

What this means for you is that by law, you are entitled to support that will help your success in high school as well as success in post-high school life such as college, job/vocational training, employment and independent living.  On this website page, you will find agencies that will understand exactly your situation and how to help make you successful.

Bay Area Resources

SBI may be out of business, but they have compiled a great list of other agencies that support individuals who are affected by TBI.

Enjoy a short video to learn more about these new services and how they have impacted the lives of those we serve.

AbilityPath

3/10/22 - Introducing AbilityPath's New Stroke and Brain Injury Services

AbilityPath is now the exclusive provider of rehabilitation programs and therapy services on the Peninsula for adults who have experienced a stroke or traumatic brain injury (TBI).  Services for Brain Injury (San Jose) and REACH Program (Palo Alto) were the only remaining two organizations on the Peninsula providing these services prior to their closure due to the economic impact caused by the pandemic.

We thought it was extremely important to continue the missions of these organizations who were meeting a critical need in the community. Without a solution, there would have been no remaining non-profit rehabilitation organization on the Peninsula for people with stroke and brain injuries.

The individuals currently enrolled in classes travel to Palo Alto weekly from all over the greater Bay Area, including the East Bay, San Francisco, and San Jose. Our goal is to continue to expand these services, and we are currently enrolling new students.

Social Groups

Touchstones is a support group for anyone touched by traumatic brain injury (TBI). The group meets every Wednesday evening from 5:30-7:30 p.m., virtually using zoom. This group ran in person for many years at Services for Brain Injury, and now has a home with AbilityPath. New and past participants are welcome! A separate caregiver group is starting soon (the main group is open for caregivers and those living with TBI). For more information, please contact intake@abilitypath.org.
