Now available for Young People living in San Mateo County
Paid Internships are offered Year Round
Internships are 400 hours, so if you are working 20-25 hours per week (which is typical), your internship will last 4-4.5 months.
Business Partners are flexible with the hours, so they can balance work with studies.
You can remain in the program until you get started on the pathway toward your employment and college goals.
What the internship looks like:
Includes Career exploration,
Resume development,
Interview practice,
Understanding the expectations of the workplace,
Understanding how to read a paystub, etc.
Interview
Each young adult must interview for the opportunity for which they are interested, and the host employer decides if they want to bring that candidate on as an intern.
If NovaWorks does not have an internship already developed that matches your area of interest, then your NovaWorks Career Advisor will let the NovaWorks job developer know what interest needs to be found in your local area.
Internship
NovaWorks staff will be checking in with you each week via text or phone, and sometimes a zoom meeting to see how it went.
Each week NovaWorks will approve your time card because you are paid weekly, so there must be a check in.
At the 100 hour mark, you get a formal performance evaluation from your site supervisor along with a NovaWorks advisor.
You will need to be independent enough to perform the job with a minimal level of support (meaning typical support from an employer or NovaWorks mentor)
Follow up after a year - someone will call you to check in.
They have been known to offer financial rewards for sharing documentation of employment or post secondary education/ training.

Consider contacting Jobs For Youth for support in successfully getting employment. Once you take one of their 1-hour workshops, you will get members only access to job leads and other support. If you need help, ask your case manager or transition specialist.
Adapted from their website: This program is designed to help youth increase their self-esteem and gain important job seeking skills. You will master the job application form, learn to communicate more effectively, gain interviewing skills, receive examples of resumes, cover letters, list of references, and thank you letters/emails to employers.
Here are some general job leads that teachers have found on employment sites.

October may be over, but you can always support businesses that support students with disabilities by doing the following:
If your parent owns a business, please make them aware of this and encourage them to put up poster or contact your transition specialist for ways to include individuals with disabilities in their workforce.
Please patronize the businesses or donate to the non-profit agencies that employ our students through the district's work Training program.
Try applying to the businesses below. You still need to complete an application and interview, but if you show that you are willing to work hard and do well, they may give you a chance (if they have a job opening).
