Student services work with students while they are still attending High School, and in many cases college.
Student service counselors offer counseling, guidance, and support for students interested in college, work training or employment.
VR (or Adult) Services only support individuals who are out of high school or public school programs. Counselors work with the individual to develop an Individual Plan of Employment (IPE) which may outline supports similar to student service, with the added support of funding other barriers to employment, such as interview clothing, work uniforms, bus passes, job coaching, employment tryout, or college expenses.

KEEP IN MIND: At SUHSD, ILS and TRACE students are not typically referred to DOR until a few years before they exit district programs ( for example, when they graduate from TRACE or graduate from high school and not planning to attend TRACE). That is because DOR does not typically provide 1:1 support (i.e. Job Coaching) for students until they leave district programs. This is also because the district's Transition Services Department, ILS and TRACE teachers duplicate DOR's Student Services. Most ILS/TRACE students benefit more from DOR's Adult Services (called VR services), which do not begin until a student is exited from the district programs.Your case manager or transition specialist can help you navigate the application process.
DOR has services that are specific to certain needs. Click below to find out more.
