Julie Bale

Dr. Julie Bale received her Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in Biology, Physical Education, and Health, including a teaching credential. While an undergraduate, she competed in Gymnastics and Track & Field and worked as one of the head coaches at a large gymnastic facility back in the Mid-West. In 1984, Julie moved to San Diego to train with a national coach in Track & Field and began working at San Diego Sports Medicine Center. It is there she was introduced to the President of Continuing Education, who suggested she should apply to SDCCE to become a teacher for the college with the College of Emeriti. In the fall of 1985, she taught her first class for the college, a Body Dynamics classes at a special setting facility. During her career with SDCCE, she completed her Master of Arts in Physical Education, with emphasis in Applied Exercise Physiology. Julie was selected by the College of American Sports Medicine (ACSM) to be present her findings from her Master’s thesis “Relative Effects of Exercise on Flexibility in Frail Elderly, 75-95 year of age” at the regional ACSM Conference and the abstract was published. In 2003, Julie returned to school to pursue a Master’s of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology, finishing with a terminal degree of Doctorate of Clinical Psychology.

During her years teaching for SDCCD, Julie kept herself busy with other pursuits, including getting married and raising three active children within three years of each other. In addition, Julie taught for-credit courses in Physical Education at Miramar College and Grossmont College. In 1987, she became the President/Owner of a personal fitness s-corporation, specializing in training high-risk individuals, though all levels were trained. She developed, patented and marketed a resistance band which she was able to share with her Older Adult students during her classes. As a representative of her training company and during her times as a Director/Executive Instructor of a women-only fitness center, Julie instructed specialty fitness classes, lectures and workshops for a variety of venues. She was an instructor for AFAA’s Personal Trainer Instruction/Certification 3-day Workshop travelling on weekends across the western United States. While fulfilling required hours for her Doctorate degree, she facilitated and co-facilitated psycho-educational classes, and designed/facilitated a Twelve-Week Health and Wellness Curriculum for an in-patient a veteran rehab/homeless facility. For the Older Adult program, she designed and provided in-services for instructors of SDCCE and developed a progressive functional fitness assessment for, but not limited to, students in special settings.

In 2006, Julie received an 80% contract, and when offered a 100% contract position, Julie accepted. Julie has taught all levels of classes, specializing mostly in special settings. When Covid occurred, Julie went back into the active populations taking an active role sharing her knowledge of health and fitness to her students and peers. She continues to increase her knowledge by participating various webinars, trainings and certifications in health, fitness, rehab, psychology and technology. Teaching all levels of fitness, Julie has learned that there is always something a person can do, no matter what their limitation or abilities may be. When she teaches, you will always hear “Modify as needed.”

During her down time, Julie enjoys reading, attempting to play the piano, taking adventures and “playing” that may involve walking, mountain biking, hiking, running, in-line skating, ice skating, kayacking, paddling and eating with family, friends and/or friends she hasn’t met yet.
