Welcome Letter Spring 2022 from Instructor Helena Wei

I want to first welcome you all, both returning and new students. Once again, I’m excited and looking forward to our Spring Semester (2022) together.

Spring Semester Registration started in Nov 2021. You are receiving this letter because you are on my class rosters. If you have friends/family that wish to enroll, please have them register ASAP. All of our classes will be conducted online (Same as Fall 2021). There will be three-component to ensure your optimal learning experience: 1) Synchronized Zoom session, 2) A-synchronized Canvas course work, and 3) Piano Masterclass/Clinic performance tutorials. The more you participate the more you will get out of it :)

If you have never installed Zoom yet, you can easily click the hyper-link below from my invite and it will take you automatically to the classroom during class time, you will be asked to launch right on the spot- yes, do say yes to the questions. Of course, you can get yourself more familiar with the functions by going to Zoom Support.

Helena’s Spring Piano Classes:

Our first class of the spring semester will commence on Wednesday, Feb 02, 2022

Beginning (84533) Level 1: Mondays at 10:00

and/or Level 2: Tuesdays at 10:00

Intermediate (84534) - Level 3: Wednesdays at 1:00

and/or Level 4: Wednesdays at 10:00

Advanced (84535) - Level 5 (Formally Intermediate) Tuesdays at 1:00,

and/or Level 6 (Formally Advanced) Mondays at 1:00

Co-Requisites:

Piano Performance A (84536): Highly recommended for lecture levels 4,5,6 (Experienced)- Thursdays at 10:00

Piano Performance B (84537): Highly recommended for lecture levels 1,2,3 (Rudimentary)- Thursdays at 1:00

Listening to the recordings will help you anticipate the appropriate level for you. Many of my students sign-up for multiple levels to cover many different focuses I have for each level.

Waiting Room Policy: Please be ready to join my Zoom Meeting 10 min prior to each class. This is an honor system. I want to believe you will do everything you can to join me on time. I will enable the waiting room, so there will be no interruptions while the class is in session.

If you are late...I just won’t get a chance to greet you when you come in.

If you need to leave early...there will be recordings, so you will not miss anything.

How?

Set up your Smartphone/Laptop/Tablet/or just a phone, so that your camera frame can capture you sitting at the keyboard, with your hands visible on the keys from the side or top view. You may need to elevate your device or set your phone on a selfie stick stand so you can be hands-free from holding your device, and can be easily within reach to control audio/visual tabs. If you don’t have any of the above devices, a simple phone call to listen in will still provide you the opportunity to learn!

When you enter the Meeting Room: You will automatically be put on “MUTE”. Please make sure you are “MUTED” unless asked to “UNMUTE”. For dial-ins please press *6 (Star 6) to mute and unmute.

Software Downloads:

Other than downloading the Zoom.us app here are the additional apps we will be using.

Canvas: We will be using this a-synchronized learning platform in conjunction with our weekly synchronized lecture series (Zoom) to provide you with a fully-online learning experience. You will go to https://sdccd.instructure.com for your weekly lessons (modules). Only if you have properly registered in my class will you have access to that specific course shell. So tell your friends and family, to register at SDCE.EDU as soon as possible.

Flipgrid: Automatically integrated with Canvas modules. A useful recording platform to encourage student interactions. You may post your weekly practice progress through this App within our modules.

Textbooks:

Try getting your textbooks asap if you don’t have them. You can purchase them easily from Amazon.com or any retail music store.

Equipment:

You will need a keyboard to practice and make the best out of it.

Preferably your keyboard should have the following functions:

1) 88 keys (full-keyboard)

2) Touch-sensitive (To give you control of loud and soft when you press down the keys)

3) Pedal
