Wrestling, a very interesting sport. Although it's tough and looks scary, the players really enjoy it. Wrestling means different things to all of them and they all have a different view for it. When asked why these students joined wrestling, Parul S. replied, " I do karate outside of school and I thought that wrestling would be a good way for me to learn another fighting style." Parul's reason to join was because she wanted to learn a new skill; however, here Harley S. said something else, "I joined wrestling because it's fun. I've been doing it all my life, it's a part of me. I love winning, it's the BEST part." A difference could be clearly seen between the two responses and that's because, wrestlers have different point of views of what they're doing. Yes, they are all doing the same thing; however, they are wrestlers with their own special style.
Most wrestlers also said that they joined because they wanted to be stronger at other things, so basically wrestling was just like a tool to them. Victor C. said, "I joined wrestling because I wanted to be good at most sports involving strength and wrestling was my way!" Darveon M.'s response to this question was: "I joined because I wanted to be better at football. That is my ultimate goal."
Right now, all the responses seem different from one another; however, what interested me the most was that the response to the question "Who keeps you going through hard times or failure in wrestling?" was similar in a one way or another. When Anthony D. was asked this question he answered with, "My friends. Darveon, Gavin, Harley... they're the ones who keep me going!" We got the same response from Jack C., "My friends got me into it and they support me."
As I said before, wrestling is a tough sport; however, the spirit makes the pain more bearable. These wrestlers have done a lot in that they brought pride to our school. They indeed have won manifold victories!
Hard working wrestlers
Our Keller Junior High girls volleyball team had a very aggressive season this year. They’ve won four matches and lost five. They had worked hard and gave 200% in each game during their tough practices which made them better. Each individual player had their strengths and weaknesses. Their strengths were passing to one another, calling out “mine”, and cheering on their teammates. One of their areas for growth was serving. We have interviewed two of the 7th grade volleyball players on the team. Several questions were asked, starting with what made them join volleyball. Madyson M. replied, “ I joined volleyball to try a new sport.” This was one reason she tried out and was lucky to make it in.
Some girls even went to volleyball training camps to gain knowledge on the sport and that gave them a higher chance of getting onto the team. When asked, “What is your favorite part about volleyball?”, Giselle A. answered, “My favorite part about volleyball is getting to play it with all of my friends and getting to learn new skills from a coach who has had experience throughout his life as well. Having the opportunity to play volleyball on a team at school is a great privilege that I am very thankful for and I enjoy playing it.” Their goal in volleyball was to try no matter what happens. If they try extremely hard, they will be able to succeed in the game. Also, the girls were trying their best to represent Keller even if they won or lost. The team said that it feels amazing to be part of a group and work together because they can make new friends, get to know one another, all while learning new skills and strategies from one another. Congratulations girls, you indeed represented Keller in a good way and we are all, without a doubt, proud of you!
Volleyball team in high spirits before their tournament
Seventh grade volleyball team
This is an event that took place on February 22nd at Jay Stream Middle School. The Keller coaches that led the team were Mr. Sroka and his assistant Mr. Kaper. This is an event where dedicated people who play basketball team up and teach students with autism who want to participate in the sport. They practice during every Advisory class for the ultimate tournament. The Keller team had three games: the first game was Keller vs Stratford, the second game was Keller vs Jay Stream, the last game was Keller vs Addams.
Reshma: Hello. Let's start off with you providing us with your names so that we know who makes up the team.
Players: Simran, Kaylee, Alex, and Brandon.
Reshma: Why did you join the unified basketball team?
Simran: To help kids and to make them feel included.
Kaylee: To give everyone an opportunity.
Alex: After being in Club Unify, working with ASD kids was really interesting and I wanted to work with them more. So when I got the invitation of being the manager of unified basketball, I was thrilled to and joined it immediately. Another thing is that we get to skip Advisory. Last thing is that two metal parts came out of my shoe because I am terrible at dribbling and those two parts came out.
Brandon: I want to make sure that Keller is a success.
Reshma: If you had the chance to play again, would you?
All students: An unanimous yes!
Reshma: Why would you join again?
Simran: It is fun and you can make others feel better.
Kaylee: It is fun to help them out.
Alex: Unified basketball is a fun opportunity to meet other people. Also, we got Subway.
Brandon: It is a good learning environment.
While there, staff reporter Reshma got to see the awards handed out in this order: fourth place went to Stratford Middle School, third place to Jay Stream Middle School, second place to Keller Junior High and the winner of this year was Addams Junior High. Congratulations to Keller and all the other teams!
