Call it seasonal sadness or the winter blues. There is just something about the cold, grey weather that can keep people down. The key then becomes how to minimize how long it keeps you there. Read these top five tips on how to get back up on your feet!
Clocks aren't just something that hang on a wall or are displayed on your smart phone. Everyone has a clock that ticks away inside of their body. Clocks that can be found outside of your body are set to synchronize to a transmitter that is connected to a frequency standard that is tightly controlled and regulated. The problem with humans is that (more often than not) they are uncontrolled and often unpredictable, especially teens who are notorious for staying up late and being forced to wake up way before they are ready. Yet, if you want to fight the blues, it is recommended that you go to bed soon after the sun goes down and wake as it comes up. If this isn't possible (due to having a tight school schedule), then at least keeping a consistent bed and wake time (even on the weekends) can help fight fatigue.
It's not pretty! The system gets sludgy!
Our bodies are very similar!
By participating in exercise, you get much needed oxygen into your system which keeps all things functioning at optimal levels, including brain and body function.
When sunlight hits our eyes, it sends a message through a nerve up to a specialized gland in the brain that releases a hormone known to put people in a "good mood", serotonin. And on the days when it is cloudy and grey, we can still get our brain to release this special feel-good hormone by making sure we have lots of vitamin D in our diets. Nuts, olive oil, avocados, eggs, and fatty fish can help get our vitamin D levels up in no time!
Did you know that our hearts send out a magnetic field that others can feel? Do you have a friend or family member that is upbeat and friendly? Find them and hang out awhile. Their mood is literally contagious and can help reset your own system. Psychologists call this co-regulation, but beware! Friends who are angry and negative can also set your system to match their mood as well.
It never hurts to ask yourself, "What do I need now, in order to feel better?"
Go ahead and grab that cup of cocoa. Snuggle in and binge watch your favorite show. Go on that gaming campaign. Call up that friend.
A lot of little moments can add up over time. Picture it like a piggy bank and soon your happiness meter will be full.
