More Than Music
What is the connection between music, United Sates History, and sustainability? How can an industry rooted in culture be more sustainable for the environment?
Grade 11
Overview: Music is foundational in many cultures, historical movements, and is a culture of its own. It can be healing and empowering. It spans generations. However, the resources that are required to make music are finite. SABE 11th grade students will study the impact the music industry has on the environment, and research methods that are sustainable. In their history and English classes, students will focus on the history of music and how it has changed with political movements and cultural shifts. They will work with the local company, Taylor Guitar to build guitars made from discarded materials that would otherwise end up in landfills.
Project Initiation: The planning process started over summer of 2023 at the PBL Institute. We utilized the plan from the previous year and made updates and adaptations as needed. For the SABE 11th grade PBL, the students had Ms. Savino for English all year and so she used her class as the launching point for the 11th grade PBL project by introducing all aspects of the projects to her students.
Project Exploration and Development: Fine Woodworking: Build a Taylor Guitar from donated kits; field trip to Taylor Guitar to learn about the manufacturing process. English: Research around sustainability in the music industry and learned about the specifics of sustainability within Taylor Guitar Company; created a research project around music and activism. U.S. History: Researching music throughout American history and connecting it to greater historical movements and protests
Project Revision and Exhibition: Reflection - post assignments and discussion about their connections to the music, what they learned and what stood out throughout the process.
