Marston Middle School
Essential Question: How do we maintain the benefits of an industrialized society while mitigating the negative impacts on the environment?
8th Grade
Overview
Students have learned about the positive and negative ways industrialization has shaped our way of life through inventions, medical advances, etc. They then learned about the negative impact on our environment like air pollution, water pollution, land waste, and energy inefficiency.
Project Initiation
The project incorporated authenticity by using real life situations to connect to the 8th grade history and science curriculum which was industrialization and the environment. Real life case studies were used to analyze the environment. Students also worked with industry partners such as SDGE Energy Innovation, SD air Quality Control District, I love a Clean San Diego, Otay Valley Regional Park, Pure Water San Diego, and San Diego Coast Keeper.
Project Exploration and Development
Students went into the field to test water samples and to the SDG&E Innovation center to build solar circuits and to learn about energy use in food transportation, etc. Students produced and analyzed data in all four categories of Air quality, land waste, energy use, and water quality. They came up with an action plan to improve those statistics and wrote letters to legislators with a law proposal. All Industry partners came to Marston to give presentations to students and some worked with students on testing and analyzing data. Some students created PSA's or Infographics to display their data and inform their audience.
Project Revision and Exhibition
Students were going to present their work at a school wide exhibition. We did not get to this part of our project.
