Kearny High School DMD
Essential Question: How do we lead effective change?
9th Grade
Overview
The focus of this project is to raise community awareness about the issues surrounding food sustainability while analyzing and innovating effective solutions.
Project Initiation
For our project launch, our client, Emily Usaha from Strategic Energy Innovations, gave a brief background on the educational steps that she took to have a career in sustainability. She discussed some of the many important factors of sustainability, and displayed student work from local high schools that had been featured on SEI’s social media and website. After her presentation, we went to the Water Conservation Garden for a look at drought-resistant plants, pollinators, irrigation, and more.
Project Exploration and Development
While researching the basics of persuasion through an article about food waste in English class, students also developed video production techniques through the skillful use of camera shots and angles. As their skills continued to progress, students were put into strategic collaborative production teams. As students entered Biology during the second semester, they focused on analyzing and interpreting data to explore the science behind food sustainability. Students reflected on their own habits and made choices based on feasible changes that they could make in their own lives. They expanded this vision to include ways to persuade their selected audience to embrace these changes as well.
Project Revision and Exhibition
Students went through multiple phases of reflection and revision for each step of the production process. The first phase was peer review workshops and teacher feedback from the grade-level team. Then, our client, Emily Usaha from Strategic Energy Innovations, and Chris Goering from ECOLIFE, both visited students in their Video Production classes. Students reflected and documented the decisions that they made and the overall effectiveness of their products.
