Essential Question: What are the elements and actions needed to change public policy in your community?
11th Grade
Overview
The students will evaluate census collection data, voter participation, and voting integrity to determine the effect of these on their access to political power, technology access, and financial support for the community. The project will culminate with a submission to the NPR Podcast Challenge.
Project Initiation
We started the process by taking the students to "Tacos for Transportation" which allowed students to provide information on their transportation options in City Heights. MidCity CAN can into the classroom to talk about making change in the community through understanding ballot measures, telling stories, and public testimony. The students, also, attend a MTS Board meeting to give public testimony as well as see our government in action.
Project Exploration and Development
American Literature explored texts on the identity of being an "American" and created essays to explore the responsibilities of citizenship, AP US History explored changes within our democracy to expand rights for all Americans, GIS created story maps to explain issues of equality within the community, and Cyber Security explored the security of our voting systems. Students then selected a topic of advocacy and created a podcast to be submitted to the NPR Podcast challenge - AP US History and English worked on the writing of the script and Video Production aided students with recording and editing the podcast for submission.
Project Revision and Exhibition
Students completed a timeline of tasks and check points to revise their scripts to develop a podcast that explained the history as well as community and individual solutions to living in the US today.
