Montgomery Middle STEAM Magnet
Essential Question: How do our choices impact our community, and what responsible changes can we make to create a healthy and sustainable environment?
7th Grade
Overview
At Montgomery STEAM Magnet, our 7th grade team overall focus will be to inspire our community to create a healthy and sustainable environment. Our clients for the project include the Linda Vista Town Council, as well as 4th grade students from our local feeder elementary schools.
Project Initiation
Through experiences with community organizations such as I Love a Clean San Diego, collaborations with our USD partner, and interactions with video and texts, our students explored and analyzed real world issues that affect the global community such as mental and physical health, healthy food options (or the lack thereof), and the environmental impacts our choices create. The student’s call to action is to use Montgomery’s garden to improve their dietary situation and that of the community.
Project Exploration and Development
Through standards based learning, students engaged in explorations of real-world issues that affect our global community such as how exploitation of children in the tobacco, chocolate, and coffee industries has led to a lifetime of poverty and health issues. Plus, students explored issues around the environment and mental health in collaboration with I Love a Clean San Diego and our USD partner. Students produced infographics and essays related to the exploitation of children plus posters articulating “A Day in the Life” of a Montgomery student exploring the daily habits, stresses, and coping mechanisms for optimal mental health. They also repurposed plastic trash as decorative planters in which they planted propagated succulents from the school garden.
Project Revision and Exhibition
We provided multiple levels of reflection throughout the learning including preliminary public speaking presentations to 6th grade students who provided initial feedback for the students. From there, fellow students and teachers provided next level feedback to help students revise and prepare for the Exhibition of Student Learning. Lastly, students exhibited the deliverables at the Exhibition of Student Learning, where students received feedback from their peers, families, and community members.

A Day in the Life

Artist Statement- A Day in the Life, 2019
In a day of my life I usually wake up with my dog. Then I spend some time with my grandma and mom. Once I’m at school I talk with my friends. Most of the time at school I’m doing work on my computer and sometimes on paper. During the day I usually feel tired, stressed, confused, curious or crazy. To cope with stress I talk to someone about what’s going on or spend time by myself listening to music.

Artist Statement- A Day in the Life, 2019
Some emotions that I usually feel in a typical day of my life are being stressed, happy or sleepy. These are some ways on how I manage my relationships with friends, family and teachers. One way on how I manage my relationships is my communication with others; another way is that I respect my friends' differences. The last way I manage my relationships is by being honest and talking with others to figure out and understand what's going on. People that I contact with each day are my friends, mom, dad and sister.
