Hoover High School - AoIT Academy
Essential Question: How can you use your advocacy to shape America?
11th Grade
Overview
The students will research a public policy in the community using data to determine the effect on their community. The project will be based on the students of each group selecting an issue and taking action to educate the community through an activity or action.
Project Initiation
The project begin with advocacy training with Mid City CAN and how students can use their voice to create change in their community. Students did zoom meetings in their American Literature class as well as exploring texts of advocacy through United States History. In addition, I News Source came into the classroom to discuss finding valid websites and writing without bias.
Project Exploration and Development
Students work in the American Literature courses about advocacy in their reading and reflections on MidCAN presentations as well as the Inewsource. In addition, they explored advocacy through readings of "To Kill A Mockingbird", "Bodega Dreams", "Gabi: Girl in Pieces" as well units on Jim Crow policing and Zoot Suits. In US History we learn about the advocacy of Civil Rights for African Americans, Native Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian American, etc. The students respond to DBQ questions that relate to the social changes through advocacy.
Project Revision and Exhibition
Students in the US History students recorded a zoom meeting discussing the issues leading up to the American Revolution and created an audio file. They work in groups to develop their podcasts in the Am Lit and US History courses to develop, edit, and revise the podcast scripts throughout the semesters. Finally, Multimedia worked with students on editing the podcast in the wevideo.com software.
