Montgomery Middle STEAM Magnet
Essential Question: How can we develop sustainable practices to help solve the inequities of our community?
7th Grade
Overview
The United Nations 17 sustainable development goals promote worldwide wellbeing and create an equitable, healthy and sustainable community for students and stakeholders. Students will investigate, research, and analyze key concepts and developing solutions to inequalities within the community.
Project Initiation
Students began each semester designing a personal identity asset map to highlight their strengths, interests, family identity and what they are passionate about.
Students collaborated with I Love a Clean San Diego and met with the client from the Impact Linda Vista Initiative (ILVI) as well as clients from the University of San Diego.
Project Exploration and Development
Students collaborated with USD faculty and students to explore food availability and environmental health in the community. They also collaborated with adults from the Impact Linda Vista Initiative to explore the process for making change in the community plus the mental and physical health of the residents and the San Diego River. Students collected data on the availability of quality food resources in the neighborhood and conducted self evaluations on their own diets and where to locate healthy food options. They also looked at historical connections and how the equitable availability of resources can cause conflict or be caused by conflicts at home and abroad. Lastly, students argued for why we should invest in sustainable consumption and production of natural.
Project Revision and Exhibition
Students have regular opportunities to edit and revise their work on an ongoing basis. This happens not only from peers and adults on campus but also through the collaboration with clients/community partners throughout the process. In addition, students have the opportunity to formally reflect on their work through Student Led Conferences and will exhibit the work in June in a formal exhibition. The exhibition, this year, will be virtual exploration of the work due to the pandemic.
