Marston Middle School
Essential Question: How can we inform the public about the dangers posed by microplastics, and influence their use of plastic products?
6th Grade
Overview
We worked with San Diego Coastkeeper to create a PR Campaign introducing people to microplastics: where they are found, dangers presented by microplastics, and ways to reduce them. Teams created campaigns and the best campaigns took over San Diego Coastkeeper's Facebook and Instagram feeds.
Project Initiation
Students connected with the urgent need to protect our oceans by studying watersheds, rivers, and the development of civilizations. Students researched the prevalence and dangers of single use items and microplastics and their impact on our oceans. We conducted field research in our own community with our official PBL launch. Student teams walked from Marston to Mission Bay picking up and sorting trash along the route, with our client, San Diego Coastkeepers.
Project Exploration and Development
Students conducted research to support their premise that the world’s waterways are in imminent danger. They learned the important role that oceans and rivers play in regulating our climate and providing humanity with food, recreation and occupations. They compiled data about pollution generated by human consumption of plastic products. They collaborated with San Diego Coastkeeper, learning from their clients expertise and receiving feedback on various aspects of the project. Student teams prepared questions and posed them to Dr. J Brandon, key researcher of microplastics at Scripps Institute of Oceanography in a video symposium. Student teams created advertising campaigns to expand public awareness of the problems posed by microplastics and inspire people to mitigate those problems.
Project Revision and Exhibition
San Diego Coastkeeper reviewed student products, in stages and (due to the advent of remote learning) received written feedback from their teacher. They consulted with one another on table message boards. They revised their product in response to discussions and feedback. The final products of the top campaigns were exhibited on San Diego Coastkeeper’s Facebook Page and Instagram Account. An advertising spot for other campaigns will appear on a school media release next year.
