9th Grade
Overview
Students researched risks and resources to human needs, according Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, that are present in their community. Students learned and presented current police responses to safety needs and the rights and responsibilities of civilians interacting with law enforcement.
Project Initiation
Students attended a panel discussion with community activists Attorney Genevieve Jones-Wright, Esq., social worker and artist Kendrick Dial, Restorative Practitioner and political candidate, Aeiramique Glass Blake to learn about concerns, progress and ongoing efforts around community safety and police interactions. These speakers demonstrated a variety of ways that they bring awareness to important topics.
Project Exploration and Development
In Bio, students learned Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and created an Ecosystem Map of their neighborhood to identify resources and risks for meeting physiological needs. In the CCTE class students learned about Safety Needs and researched crime via crime mapping and interviews. They combined data and identified patterns and correlations to select one one safety need to research further. Students participated in a virtual tour of the SDPD 911 Call Center to learn how police respond to emergencies and calls for help. They also learned about 3 types of police contacts and rights and responsibilities within each contact. Students produced a PSA to share their findings about safety concerns in their community and the rights and responsibilities of civilians when they interact with the police.
Project Revision and Exhibition
Students met with other peer groups to present, collect feedback and revise their work. Students were directed to follow the same pattern with family or friends as well. Students were originally supposed to give presentations to the San Diego Police Department Captain’s Advisory Board, but we did not have time to develop the project to the original scope and the Captain’s Advisory Board was on hiatus after a change in leadership at Southeastern Division.
