Roosevelt Middle School SLIM
Essential Question: How do people make change in society? Does power mean influence? And, what kinds of power are most influential? Students will look within to explore personal and social values and how they work to influence behavior. Then, students will look outward to identify (and celebrate) people who influence them and make healthy and positive changes in their community.
7th Grade
Overview
Students began by an examination of famous people throughout the Middle Ages in their Spanish Immersion History class. Based on the results of this exploration, the students reflected and applied their learning to identify heroes from their community who exemplified the qualities and values that fundamentally influence others to make positive change. This project combined the efforts of the World Languages and History in Spanish classes. It strengthened the collaborative and interdisciplinary strengths of the Roosevelt SLIM Program.
Project Initiation
As an interdisciplinary unit, the students explored the concept of 'hero' and 'change' in their history class by studying heroic figures throughout history. The students then applied their learning by asking the question "How does this relate to us today?" Our project was launched at the San Diego Central Library to research and explore resources. We had guest lecturers, like Anna Christina from Telemundo and participated in photographic techniques and video production at the San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts.
Project Exploration and Development
The students wrote a biography in Spanish of their 'heroic' historical figure using multiple sources. The students also composed an essay on the hero in their community. They created a video journal celebrating tht person and how they influence others in a positive way in their local community.
Project Revision and Exhibition
The Hero Among Us Project was an ongoing interdisciplinary project. Students researched, wrote, reflected and re-wrote the project at various phases throughout the academic year. The culminating project, the video presentation, was to be displayed at the Veteran's Memorial Center across the street from Roosevelt Middle School and on Telemundo in their series, Todos Somos Heroes.
