Essential Question: How can we empower our community to improve its quality of life while preserving our diverse cultural identity?
10th Grade
Overview
Students studied the housing crisis in their community and brainstormed solutions to make improvements without the impacts of gentrification. Students created art featuring community hubs to help draw attention to a specific community issue they cared about and then developed 3D-printed solutions.
Project Initiation
Students explored the Linda Vista community through an online web quest to learn more about its history and development. After seeing how Linda Vista got its start, they then analyzed the article “The Impact of Affordable Housing on Families and Communities,” identifying areas that they saw reflected in the community before deciding which sub-topics to further explore.
Project Exploration and Development
After researching about Linda Vista and the housing crisis of San Diego in English, students then created a brand for Linda Vista, produced posters to highlight community hubs of Linda Vista worth preserving and digital stencils that illustrated their problem of focus in Multimedia. Finally, they created small-scale 3D-printed solutions that would benefit a person in-need in their chemistry class, using the engineering and design process.
Project Revision and Exhibition
Students received feedback from industry professionals, as well as their team of teachers and then made revisions to improve their deliverables. These revisions were reflected on in their production documents. The Linda Vista Multi-Cultural Fair then partnered with us, integrating student work into their scavenger hunt and displaying it throughout the community as well as on social media. Finally, students will present in their defense of learning in June.
