Essential Question: How can we learn about sustainability practices and use these practices to promote and advertise for the local companies and people who use them?
10th Grade
Overview
Students learned about sustainability practices and advertising techniques. Students interviewed local sustainable businesses (Chinita's Pie & El Cholo's Kid) about sustainability and running a business. Then students used this knowledge to create infographics to promote these businesses.
Project Initiation
We launched this through two separate units in Chemistry Class and English Class about sustainability and advertising. Then we made the connection with both of these topics with local businesses and then posed the question on how students can use this knowledge to help promote both local businesses and emphasize the importance of their sustainable practices. This helped students connect both through adult relationships, as well as an authentic connection to their local communities.
Project Exploration and Development
Students learned not only about sustainability and persuasive rhetoric in Chemistry and English, but they learned how these issues have real world applications that can impact our local community. They also learned how to interact professionally and carry out an authentic interview with adults in order to gather information to create a better infographic to highlight the work these people are doing in the local community.
Project Revision and Exhibition
We planned to have revisions where the local businesses we worked with looked at the infographics that students created in order to use them as ways to promote their businesses. Unfortunately our community partner's time and the online environment made this process difficult. However, we wanted to emphasize that the process of revision would be informed by students working with clients, instead of trying to get a better grade from Nakamoto and Durkin.
