Making My Mark: Putting it in a Podcast
Tell us a story about your school or community: about something that happened there — recently or in the past — that your audience should know about. (advocacy theme) What is a moment in history that all students should learn about (and how it is relevant today)? (US History)
Grade 11
Overview: Students will explore advocacy in City Heights to create a podcast for the NPR Podcast Challenge 2024 that incorporates their personal history(ies), US History, and ways to to see the world/community through their individual eyes. The question will be based on how history connects with themselves and the greater community. The AOIT Academy will develop a podcast for the NPR Student Podcast Challenge using industry standard equipment and professionals.
Project Initiation: Combined activity with the DOJO to launch the theme of “Making My Mark” with students attending a working presentation by media personalities (Jesse Pagan), community leaders, and school personnel.
Project Exploration and Development: Students will actively work on their issue or history with the community partners and develop a podcast explaining their advocacy during the school year in order to teach other students throughout the United States to be more involved in community change while simultaneously being that voice of change in their community. All student teams will submit a podcast to the NPR Student Podcast Challenge.
Project Revision and Exhibition: Student teams will prepare a presentation with their team for a meeting (Zoom) with community members to read their script, history research, documentation, and interview questions,. for feedback on ways to improve their podcast.
