Heroes of the Midway
What impact does volunteerism have on individuals and communities, and how can it be effectively promoted and sustained?
Grade 9
Overview: Students will be put in groups 3-4 with one volunteer from the USS Midway. Students will meet with their volunteer, learn about their life and role on the USS Midway through field trips and interviews. They will then make an interactive book that commemorates the volunteers' time at the Midway. The interactive book will be a two pager per volunteer that has pictures to represent the volunteers life and time at the Midway. Users will then use the app overly to make the pages interactive. Each picture will link to either a biography about the volunteer, a short synopsis about their post/job at the USS Midway, and lastly, a short documentary on that volunteer's life and time at the USS Midway.
Project Initiation: The planning process established clear objectives, activities, and outcomes for the project. It outlined step-by-step instructions for students, providing a roadmap for understanding what they would do and why. By aligning objectives with student interests and learning goals, the planning process ensured relevance and engagement, enhancing comprehension and motivation.
Project Exploration and Development: Throughout the project, students learned a multitude of skills and concepts while producing tangible outcomes. They gained subject-specific knowledge related to the project's topic, deepening their understanding through research, analysis, and application. Additionally, students honed critical thinking and problem-solving abilities as they navigated challenges and made decisions during the project's production phases. The project fostered collaboration and communication skills, as students likely worked in teams, sharing ideas, delegating tasks, and presenting their findings or creations to others. Creativity and innovation were also nurtured as students brainstormed solutions, designed prototypes, or crafted original pieces.Â
Project Revision and Exhibition: Students had opportunities for revision and reflection through peer feedback, self-assessments, and teacher evaluations. We included times for students to review their work, identify areas for improvement, and make revisions based on feedback. Additionally, the project likely incorporated exhibitions where students showcased their final products or presentations, allowing for reflection on their learning journey and sharing their accomplishments with peers, teachers, and volunteers
