Clairemont Health & Medical Sciences Academy

Overview: Students will be exposed to a variety of professions in the Health and Medical Sciences Field through Live, in person, guest speakers, and a Launch that includes a Fire Engine and Crew, and a Field Trip called “Women Who Inspire in STEAM.” Working in both their 10th grade English class and their Principles of Biomedical Sciences CTE class.

Project Initiation: Students were exposed to a variety of professions in the Health and Medical Sciences Field through in person, guest speakers, and a Launch that included a Fire Engine and Crew, and a Field Trip called “Women Who Inspire in STEAM.”

Project Exploration and Development: In English, we completed, a class study of: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. We continued our foray into the Health and Medical Sciences Field by hearing from a multitude of Guest Speakers who represent a variety of career pathways in the health and medical field. Inspired by our Industry Professionals, students then picked a career field and created an interactive website to present and share. The website contains: Home Page, About the Profession, Digital Dictionary, Case Study, Podcast + Script, Guest Speaker Notes, and Sources Cited.

Project Revision and Exhibition: Students not only created their websites in our classes, they also engaged in a Project Peer Review Cycle of Inquiry, and also a Peer Presentation Practice Cycle. Students were then given feedback and time to revise their final Websites and Presentations. This was all to prepare for a final presentation to an Authentic Audience, that consists of some of our 12th graders, our guest speakers, and other adults in our community and on our campus.
