The Color Collective: Skills to Craft Community
How can we explore our skills to define our role in our community?
Grade 10
Overview: The students interviewed an employee of Dunn-Edwards about their pathway and skills that have helped them become an essential part of the company. The students then created The Color Collective Magazine which told the story of their client while artistically displaying how they were inspired to look deeper at their own skills and abilities.
Project Initiation: For this day-long project launch the students started with a web quest of the Dunn-Edwards website, including employee spotlights in English. This ended with the students creating their own "employee profile" to reflect on their own skills. In Media, they played a game called Hues and Cues to start exploring color and descriptive language that is associated with colors. In Chemistry, the students made their own paint and used it to paint the Dunn-Edwards logo.
Project Exploration and Development: Students interacted with the client through interviews at Dunn-Edwards Point Loma as well as a field trip to their headquarters with the CEO, Marketing, and Lab Technicians who are responsible for varying areas within the company. The interview was turned into a Q&A for their magazine. Additionally, we partnered with Comic Con San Diego to help students think visually about their project experiences which translated into a comic they made about Dunn-Edwards' work with environmental impacts which they researched in Chemistry. Students also created color poems by choosing a Dunn-Edwards color and utilizing figurative language to bring the color to life. This is all housed in a Magazine with other skills and college/career based elements.
Project Revision and Exhibition: Students were asked to revise deliverables throughout the process after receiving feedback from team teachers. The students will be showcasing their work for families, clients, and partners at an on-campus showcase at the end of May. Additionally, students will complete their defense of learning to reflect on their skills utilized throughout the year as they completed their project work.
