Be Human
Why do we want to raise awareness for human trafficking?
Grade 9
Overview: The main age target of human trafficking is people in high school. There is not a lot of information about human trafficking given to teenagers despite us being the target demographic. Due to this we made an app which informs people about human trafficking and what they can do to prevent it.
Project Initiation: We were first given the project as an assignment in computer science and English class where we could choose a topic to research and build an app about. We got very interested in our topic and the lack of knowledge surrounding it. We decided to take the project further after hearing about a global coding competition called Technovation. We entered our project in the competition and now we’re waiting for the results.
Project Exploration and Development: We created several deliverables for the project to show the different aspects of the topic. We wanted to encourage people to report human trafficking when they see or suspect it in their community. We learned all about our topic, through survivor stories and statistics. We had to learn how to take everyone’s opinion and put it into one final app that we were all happy with and proud of. We had lots of different people test out our app through its evolution to give us feedback and opinions on the design aspect and layout since we struggled with that a lot. Most of the feedback we got was about the functionality of everything and how to show the buttons.
Project Revision and Exhibition: We revised our app based on the feedback we got from friends, family, and teachers. We got a lot of feedback related to the design aspect of our app, the visibility of the buttons and the background. We were often told to change the color of the background due to lack of creativity. Many people also said that we should make the buttons more visible because people did not know what they were/if they worked. We improved all these things and everyone said out app looks a lot better.
