Building Epic Community Games
How can we build community through Epic Games?
Grade 9
Overview: Our two Freshmen Intro Design classes were tasked to design and build fun, interactive unplugged, big, outdoor games for the lunch quad that are fun to play and watch so students have fun, interactive things to do during the lunch break.
Project Initiation: Our VP, Mr. Hoffman and ASB launched the project by sharing their goals to fix student boredom in the lunch quad. We were challenged to design lunchtime quad games that were fun, larger than usual, safe and able to be easily moved.
Project Exploration and Development: Guest speakers from Schmidt Design Group shared their landscape architecture careers and park design process. We took a field trip to their Civita Park and saw many large games for park visitors to enjoy. We were excited and ready to get to design our own quad games. Students/groups in Intro to Design proposed game concepts with sketches. All of the games and proposals were uploaded to a Project website. (Link to Sites) Student groups presented their designs to ASB officers and the VP who gave us feedback and asked questions about our game ideas. Our teachers decided which games could be made safely in the Makerspace. The games chosen to build were: Large chess set and Game Board, Small table top chess sets with 3D printed pieces and 2 Big Jenga sets.
Project Revision and Exhibition: Student teams designed/created prototypes for their part. As we finished the design, the class gave feedback, and then we prototyped and then built them. We all cut Big Jenga pieces using the Mitersaw and helped paint. All learned to drill and use the drill press building and assembling Big Chess pieces. All painted, either the pieces or the big or small game boards. A team designed 3D printed game pieces and discussed how to improve failed prints.Â
