Grade 8
Overview: This project incorporated the U.S. History unit on the Industrial Revolution by studying its societal benefits. Science was incorporated by analyzing the negative environmental impacts.
Project Initiation: The project launch was a 25 minute video where teachers introduced the topic and informed students about the problem they would would be experts in solving. All 5 industry partners were included in the video as well. They introduced themselves and discussed how they would be participating. There were several components to the project of which students had to produce deliverables such as, inventions research, a case study, a letter to a legislator, data analysis, and PSAs.
Project Exploration and Development: The main critical concepts covered in U.S. History were causality, civics, and informed action. The content standard covered was 8.12 (Students analyze the transformation of the American economy and the changing social and political conditions of the U.S. in response to the Industrial Revolution. The interdisciplinary connection was History (Industrial Revolution) and science (environment). Students had to create action plans to solve a real life problem and write a letter to a legislator with a law proposal. They worked with 5 industry partners to conduct data analysis and learn about their expert field of study. They ultimately had to produce a google slides presentation, which included several deliverables, and present it to a panel of judges at a school exhibition.
Project Revision and Exhibition: Students had the opportunity to revise their work as each deliverable was completed and evaluated by their teacher. They were given rubrics in addition to verbal feedback and allowed to revise work that needed improvement They then mock presentations to receive feedback from their teacher and students before giving their final presentation in front of a panel during an exhibition.
