Critical Care and You: How to Clinically Assess a Patient - Animal or Human
How do we synthesize information from multiple credible sources, such as literature, databases, policy documents, and diverse perspectives from multiple disciplines, to evaluate evidence to form conclusions and inform decisions?
Grade 10
Overview: Students will be exposed to a variety of professions in the Health and Medical Sciences Field through Live, in person, guest speakers. Working in both their 10th grade English class and their Principles of Biomedical Sciences CTE class, students will create an interactive website.
Project Initiation: Industry Partners will be involved by serving as guest speakers and clients. Our students will potentially meet with the industry partners up to three times: guest speaker series, mentor check-in for patient assessment work, and as evaluators of students’ final project. Community Professionals, who are our guest speakers, will be a part of our launch, and serve as advisors during our mentor check-in for the patient assessment work students complete, and as evaluators of the final presentations.
Project Exploration and Development: Industry Partners were involved by serving as guest speakers. Our students met with a few of the industry partners multiple times: guest speaker series, mentor check-in for patient assessment work, and as evaluators of students’ final project. Community Partners, such as SDFD, SAY SD, and various medical professionals were a part of our launch in our guest speaker series. The guest speakers also were an "authentic audience" and came back and served as evaluators of the final presentations of learning by the students. Students presented to the 8th graders at Marston Middle School at the “Academy Acceptance Day” when they came to CHS on May 4, 2023, to find out their Academy for their high school career. We also included QR code information for easy access to the student created websites.
Project Revision and Exhibition: In addition to the 12 Industry Professional guest speakers, 10th graders had classroom without walls days where they would complete revisions and reflections on each other's work. There was even a practice presentation of learning day, prior to the official presentation of learning, where students were spread out and cohorted to present in 2 different classrooms over the course of 3 periods throughout the day. Students also were assessing one another's presentations using the 6 A's Rubric.
