Hooryde for Health: Food is the problem, food is the solution
How can students promote healthy nutrition in order to improve health outcomes among students and their families?
Grade 9/12
Overview: Ninth grade students conducted research about the connection between food and health. They created PSA's to educate the Hoover community about making healthy food choices, with food from the Hoover Market, to promote better health outcomes. Twelfth grade students mangaged the food distribution.
Project Initiation: The project launch was an academy-wide workshop presented by ninth grade students in colllaboration with the County Office of Education. The County Office nutrition team went to ninth grade science classrooms and taught the sessions. Then the students faciliated the same sessions with other health academy students. The workshops included "rethink your drink" and nutrition presentations.
Project Exploration and Development: Ninth grade students learned about the connection between food and health by researching many different aspects of nutrition and health. They created products to educate our school community: They produced infographics and they created PSA's that were previewed on the Nest (Our school weekly video program). Our community partner was Feeding San Diego. Feeding San Diego provided fresh produce and shelf stable items so we could open our Hoover Market. The 12th grade students worked with our community school coordinator and parent volunteers to manage the food distribtution every 1st and 3rd Tuesday. Their internship with the Hoover Market was in conjunction with their unit on community resilience from their Mending Matters class.
Project Revision and Exhibition: The 9th grade students created PSA's to educate the Hoover community about the connection between food and health. Students shared their videos with their classmates and received feedback for revisions before they submitted the final drafts to The Nest.
