Talking Trash
How can the Pacific Beach Middle School Community create more sustainable habits of recycling the waste we generate?
Overview:
Currently, Pacific Beach Middle School ranks 25th out of 25 middle schools in its ability to divert recyclable materials from the the waste the school generates. PBMS Sustainability Team will monitor the recycling habits of our school.
Project Initiation:
Talking Trash launched with I Love a Clean San Diego (client/partner) coming in to teach lessons with our 6th grade science class.
Project Exploration and Development:
PBMS Sustainability Team launches the plan to change and monitor the recycling habits of our school. 6th grade English, mathematics, and science classes will provide ongoing, specific instruction, and authentic experiences to address the problem, create and implement a solution throughout the school year. The monitoring of the plan will be validated by qualitative and quantitative evidence collected by the 6th grade students. The collection, separation, and diversion process will be executed by all 6th grade science classes on a three-week basis. A record of the contents of the recycling bins will be documented by visual observations and specific materials masses.
Project Revision and Exhibition:
Students will make Public Service Announcements (in the form of video, infographic, or Google Slides) incorporating data collected throughout the year in relation to their adopted recycle bin, to inform us on the habits we are doing well in and habits we need to improve on. Depending on the type of PSA, the student work will be displayed to our community through video shown during advisory classes and/or at the Spring Open House / IB Showcase.
