Health Equity Project
To what extent does physical, environmental and mental health impact our community and are there any disparities compared to other places in the county, or state?
Grade 10
Overview: 10th Grade students will work in their English, World History, and Human Body Systems classes to explore the essential question: To what extent does physical, environmental and mental health impact our community and are there any disparities compared to other places in the county, or state?
Project Initiation: The project will be launched by students conducting a health survey to identify common health issues in the community to raise awareness of the problems as well as create possible solutions. Simultaneously, the students will perform a 30-day health challenge to enact changes in their nutrition and physical activity. These student-driven activities will be supported by guest speakers from Sharp Equality Alliance, who will provide expertise, experience and career aspiration opportunities.
Project Exploration and Development: After community building and team development, students will take ownership by creating a community health survey. The survey and design of the 30-day health challenge will ensure the students display critical thinking, creative design and strengthen leadership skills. The students will also acquire interdisciplinary experience between the participating courses and corresponding teachers. Students will utilize ElA and HSS Common Core writing, reading, speaking, and listening standards as well as HSS Critical Concepts (Continuity and Change/Causality) by analyzing primary and secondary sources as well as when they create their Call to Action. The student generated Call to Action will expose the health issues facing our community and propose solutions to reduce existing disparities.
Project Revision and Exhibition: Students will analyze survey results and compare data to other communities. SHARP experts will work with students to help them understand the importance of collaboration with clients. Non-compliance from the survey audience and the 30-day health challenge, will enhance student reflection of the problems encountered by health professionals. Students will create a Call To Action to inform the community of why the health disparity exists and what should be done to solve the problem.
