Our Backyard: Preserve the Reserve
How can we explore and understand new territory in our neighborhood and ourselves?
Project Purpose:
Tecolote Canyon is home to an endangered chaparral ecosystem of plants and animals. It is also rich in Kumeyaay history, as it was used for food and shelter by the Kumeyaay people hundreds of years ago.The balance of the ecosystem is threatened and the Friends of Tecolote Canyon organization seeks to support programs and events for the education, preservation, and restoration of Tecolote Canyon, as well as provide opportunities for children to learn about the animals, plants, ecology, and Kumeyaay history and culture.
Tecolote Canyon Trading Card Game
Students created an interactive trading card game featuring the Native Species, Heroes, and Threats in Tecolote Canyon. Each card features student-created artwork and research about the topic with a focus on educating 5th grade students at Chesterton Elementary School about the unique Chaparral Ecosystem in Tecolote Canyon. Students can play the game to learn about Tecolote Canyon in an interactive way.
Tecolote Canyon Children's Storybook & Video
Students wrote and illustrated a children's storybook about a specific native species in Tecolote Canyon. Through studying the hero's journey in English class, students wrote dynamic and interesting stories that will encourage their audience (5th graders at Chesterton Elementary School) to visit Tecolote Canyon.
Science Application 3D Printed Activity
Students researched, designed, and developed a 3D printed science application activity. These products serve to teach elementary school students about interactive science activities that they can complete using the 3D printed objects.
