Creating 4 Change: Celebrate, Preserve, Improve
How can students celebrate the history, preserve the culture, and improve their local community?
Overview: The purpose is to engage students in their community by celebrating the rich history, preserving the beauty of the present, and identifying problems that can be improved.
Project Initiation: The students were introduced to the project by going on a walking tour through Linda Vista from our campus. On the field trip they identified pre-determined buildings, read about the history of these locations and responded to prompts based on the locations. They also met one of our clients, Bayside Community Center.
Project Exploration and Development: While our project did not pan out as originally planned, the students were still able to create products for the Linda Vista community in their multimedia class by learning about the area's history through articles in English, analysis of demographics over time in math, walking through the community, and personal experience. While our connections were not as strong as planned, Bayside did have an opportunity to meet the students and tell them about their own process for working with and within the neighborhood and how the students can be leaders of change as well. They talked about small and meaningful projects they had their hands in around Linda Vista and introduced the community members who helped lead that transformation.
Project Revision and Exhibition: Students have had opportunity for revisions within their media classes this year. Originally, we had a larger goal of students writing a proposal with their findings and presenting to the Linda Vista Town Council as a culminating piece. This was not able to happen but we will still have students reflect on their work in an end-of-year defense of learning.
