Lasting Solutions: Housing the Homeless with Dignity and Design
When are solutions just a Band-Aid and when do they lead to lasting change?
Overview: Civic leaders often offer quick fixes to homelessness in their cities. Addressing this problem in an authentic and humanitarian way must include providing individual dignity through personal choice and control over one’s environment. Housing first project will be explored as an authentic solution.
Project Initiation: Humble Design worked with SABE students to create personalized furnishings for people transitioning from homelessness. Humble Design also offered mentors for guidance, field trips and interviews with clients to further personalize their interior environments. Finally, CEA students redesigned a commercial space that targets the needs (transitional living space, shelter, community center, etc) for a specific groups prone to experiencing homelessness.
Project Exploration and Development: Project deliverables included design scaled drawings of furnishings, fine wood working construction of bunk beds and study tables, redesign of a commercial space for transitional living using Revit, presentation of Learning that included cross-curricular connections in history, chemistry, ELA, and CCTE courses. Exhibition of student learning using advance presentation technology. Students went on field trips to Humble Design and completed volunteer work. Guest speakers included industry partners from Humble Design, Uplift San Diego, and experts on how trauma affects specific brain functions and chemistry.
Project Revision and Exhibition: Presentation of Learning Screencast or videos were presented to SABE industry partners for feedback. These were scored and school site recognitions given to students. Students will Participate in the CCTE Showcase, in May 2022 to demonstrate their outstanding projects.
