If You Build It, They Will Grow
How can we make our lives more environmentally and financially sustainable?
Overview: Recent world events have required thousands of us to spend more time in our homes than we ever dreamed. In this project, we explored how to make our lives more financially and environmentally sustainable by designing and building planter boxes for at home use, to grow herbs valued by our families.
Project Initiation: To launch our project, we partnered with our community member Urban Life Farms to introduce the importance of gardening in our lives. Then students were introduced to the project and participated in a Hoover garden tour, ending with the planting of a succulent in a small planter pot they decorated with Cardinal Pride.
Project Exploration and Development: Students learned about engineering design and construction to design and build the planters. Through history they made meaningful connections to family/history/culture and completed a family history project. They then wrote a cultural narrative based upon their family or self. They learned more about gardening, planting seeds for herbs connected to their culture, and shared family recipes that utilized these herbs. Lastly they monitored their plant growth to harvest their herbs to cook a meal.
Project Revision and Exhibition: Students showcase their work and herb growth through presentations via their public speaking class.
